In 1933 the Walcott area was living thru “The Great Depression.” This week’s Walcott Community News offered thoughts and ideas for supporting your neighbors and the community during this difficult time. Most families had a garden for food that was either eaten, canned for the coming winter or traded at the Walcott Co-op. The Co-op store was owned by stockholders who were local farmers. It was where the farmers took their produce, including meat, eggs, butter and milk to sell or trade, thus enabling them to barter for their other basic needs. Entertainment centered around the German pastimes of dancing, bird shoots, neighborhood parties and card games. The average family lived by the Depression-era motto: “Use it up, wear it out, make do or do without.”
Have you noticed in the ads that Walcott had two dance halls? Each week dancing to a variety of bands and singers was advertised and sometimes even a magician was scheduled. Some came from as far away as New York City. Don’t forget to click on the highlighted link above to view this week’s edition.
